Indian Institute of Technology Ropar invites applications from Indian citizens for Ph.D. programs in various disciplines for 1st semester of academic year 2014-2015.


Engineering
Computer Science and Engineering M.Tech. / M.E. / M.S. or equivalent qualification in computer science and engineering or equivalent degree with 60% marks (or 6.5 grade point out of 10) (55% marks for SC/ST). However, exceptional candidates having B.Tech/B.E qualification with valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to PhD programme.

A candidate with a Bachelor's degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above are exempted from requirement of GATE qualification.
Electrical Engineering First Class (or 6.5 grade point out of 10) or 60% marks in M.Tech. / M.E. / M.S. in Electrical engineering or equivalent degree.
School of Mechanical, Materials and Energy Engineering To apply for Ph.D. program in SMMEE, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
  • Master's degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master's degree by Research in Engineering/Technology. Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) in their Master's.
  • OR
  • Master's degree in Sciences with a valid score in GATE/UGC/CSIR/NET/NBHM or equivalent qualification. Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) in their Master's.
  • OR
  • Exceptional candidates having B.Tech/B.E qualification with valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to PhD programme.
A candidate with a Bachelor's degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above are exempted from requirement of GATE qualification to apply.
Science
Chemistry First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in Master or equivalent degree in Chemistry/Bio-Chemistry/Materials Science and Technology/ Pharmaceutical Sciences/Biotechnology.

Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year :
  • Valid GATE Score.
  • UGC/CSIR-NET qualification.
  • DST-INSPIRE fellowship.
Mathematics First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in Master’s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Engineering Sciences or equivalent Master’s Degree.

Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year:
  • Valid GATE Score.
  • UGC/CSIR NET qualified or NBHM or equivalent qualification.
  • DST-INSPIRE fellowship.
Physics First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in M.Sc. in Physics/B.Tech. in Engineering Physics/M.Tech. in relevant areas.

Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year :
  • Valid GATE Score.
  • UGC/CSIR NET qualification.
  • DST-INSPIRE fellowship.
Humanities and Social Sciences 55% (or 6 grade point out of 10) in M.A./M.Sc./M.Com/M.Tech/ MBA with UGC-NET. However, exceptional candidates having B.Tech/B.E qualification with valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to PhD programme.

A candidate with a Bachelor's degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above are exempted from requirement of GATE qualification to apply.

The candidates must be interested in working in the research areas/subjects mentioned below. Candidates interested in interdisciplinary research, in the relevant areas of research mentioned below can also apply.

  • Candidates are required to submit a application fee of Rs. 200/- (for SC/ST Rs. 100/-) in favour of Registrar, IIT Ropar, Account No. 30836125653, IFSC Code SBIN0013181, State Bank of India, IIT Ropar. Candidates can also pay the application fee in the form of Demand Draft in favour of Registrar, IIT Ropar Payable at Rupnagar. Candidates are required to send the Demand Draft by post to the Department/School where they are applying quoting the reference No. of the Application.
  • All selected candidates who are Indian citizens and who do not receive any other scholarship/funding, will be provided financial support by the Institute. Admission to reserved category candidates will be as per Government of India notification.
  • A limited number of Research Assistantships and other financial support for attending conferences within India and abroad are available as per MHRD norms subject to the conditions prescribed in the Institute regulations.
  • At present IIT Ropar do not offer part time PhD.
  • Mere fulfillment of the above mentioned qualifications does not entitle a candidate to be called for interview.
  • Last date of receiving the application form online / offline is 15th April 2014. The Institute will not be responsible for any kind of delay.
